I was going to wait until March to blog about the photo I took of my friend Erin Barclay because she's "The Nature Fairy" in March of my Fairy Calendar but something has come up! I've entered the photo of Erin into a contest with SoMADs at Durham College. What is SoMADs you ask? It is the Society Of Media Arts & Design and is described on Facebook as "a student group with two principal functions. First, it seeks to provide students with a positive community experience and an enriched cultural lifestyle. It works to promote a culture of art at Durham College and provides a constant source of inspiration for students in the School of Media, Art & Design (MAD). Second, the society serves as a resource for MAD students who wish to find work in their field after graduation. This is achieved by providing opportunities to further student development, showcase student creativity and build valuable relationships with working professionals.
The Society of Media, Art & Design is made up of one president, four executives and any number of council members. All council members automatically act as program representative for their respective program of study.
This society is a division of the Student Association at Durham College and represents all full time students studying in the School of Media, Art & Design."
For the awards you can enter one piece per category. If my videos had been shortened to 3 minutes I'd have entered those but maybe next time! ;) So for this years awards I have entered this photo which I will talk about a bit more after I hopefully get Erin to guest blog for me!
Soooo, there you have it. Last year I wasn't half as confident as a photographer, I barely remember what I entered in the contest when the SoMADs opened. This year I knew what I wanted to enter. When I look at my Fairy Calendar I love what I accomplished and I have different favourites for different reasons. Each one says something else to me.
When I look at both photos that I took of Erin I just love them. They turned out perfectly for what I'd envisioned. They were both at the tail end of the assignment, I'd found my groove in the studio and had FINALLY learned how to use the lights to get what I wanted out of them. The other part I love about the photos is that its Erin! Erin Barclay is a classmate of mine and an amazing photographer and model! When we first started school I would listen to Erin from across the room. You couldn't help it, she was always talking and laughing and singing. We didn't speak on a really personal level until after I'd shot the photos for the calendar and what I found out is just how fantastic she is. She's got a lot of things to say that are interesting and exciting, she's very understanding, supportive and a really good listener. So in photographing Erin I got more out of the experience than I thought I would and I'm thankful for that. I also have to say I'm hopeful we'll be able to work together throughout the years!
Posted here is a link to the SoMAD awards, please vote for the photo of Erin and share it with your friends and ask them to vote as well. Thank you!
